Main Task: Research Task 1

The genre of film which I would like to use as inspiration for my coursework is thriller. I chose this genre because it is one that I am interested in and also enjoy watching. This genre appeals to me because I enjoy the feeling of tension when watching films. To me, this is important because when you are affected mentally by a film it makes it far more memorable. The use of scary occurrences and situations which intend to frighten the audience is an easy way to entertain and keep audiences entertained throughout the film. The genre of thriller is also a good genre to use for our coursework because many other genres can be incorporated into it.
The main characteristics of a thriller movie is the use of tension and suspense, a storyline which involves good versus evil or contains a villain and one or more victims and frequent action. They usually contain one main hero who survives throughout the movie when many others don’t or who takes the life of the villain. Thrillers can range from a story about a supernatural being stalking one person or a group of people to a large scale terrorist attack and the fight to prevent it.
This genre is also a good one to use for coursework as it is possible to create a short film in this genre within the confines of school. Thriller films can be represented by the use of fast editing, music and sound effects. Especially when only the beginning two minutes of the film has to be made because the villain isn’t required to appear, only their presence needs to be recognized. This can be easily achieved using different locations for filming, skillful camera work, good actors and through the effective use of the resources that are available to us for our coursework.
